§ Feeding

We feed our birds fresh food 6 days a week. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday they get chopped up fruit and vegetable mix. On Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday they get sprouted seed. They also get celery and endive every day which we grow ourselves and corn which we buy in bulk and freeze. They have dry food at all times in their cages and are given fresh water daily.

The conures get mostly pellets with small parrot mix as a treat once a week.  The other seed eating birds are fed on small parrot mix and the lorikeets get dry and wet mix every day which is a special formula bought off a friend who is also a breeder of lorikeets and lories.  His food is also recommended by our Avian Vet and is not sold to the public.

When our birds have young they get fresh food twice daily.

We soak our sprouted seed for 24 hours then rinse thoroughly and soak for a further 1/2 hour in F10 formula or avi cleanse. Then it is aired for 12-24 hours depending on the humidity.  You should see the mung beans starting to sprout and then refrigerate until you need it (preferably no longer than a week it should still smell nutty and fresh otherwise it's no good).  We feed our birds in the late afternoon right before the sun goes down.

All the fruit and vegetables we don't grow are bought from our local fruit shop in bulk.  They know us now so usually look after us and we get it quite cheap.  It is always worth asking for discounts for fruit that is starting to get a little older as they will usually do it for you.

Please note - remove all fresh food daily as that is the easiest way to make birds sick and never mix wet food or fresh food with dry foods as this breeds bacteria very quickly.  Adult birds often won't go to old food but babies will eat anything put in front of them.

We worm all birds as they come in while in quarantine and babies before sale.  The rest are crop wormed once a year.
